  • Can I put film on a car that already has some swirl marks, or will it just lock

I have been avoiding this question for weeks because I think I already know the answer, but I would like to hear it from people who have gone through it. My grey Mitsubishi Pajero is three years old, and over time the paint has picked up fine circular scratches, mostly on the hood and the doors. I think it came from the automatic car wash I used in the first year before I knew better. In the shade you cannot see much, but when the sun hits it in the afternoon the whole car looks a bit hazy, and it bugs me every time I walk to it. Now I want to protect the front before the road stones add real chips on top of the old marks. A neighbor told me the film will hide the swirls because it is glossy and thick. My cousin said the opposite, that anything under the film stays there forever and you are just sealing your mistakes under a clear cover. A friend who detailed cars for a while said the paint should be polished first, and that is the normal step before any film goes on. I read a page on paintprotectionfilm.ae to understand how the film sits on the paint, and it made it clear that a clean, smooth surface matters a lot, which got me thinking about the order of things. I also wanted to know how Certified installers compare PPF with ceramic coating when a car is not new, because I wonder if they treat old paint differently from fresh paint. My questions are easy. Does polishing remove enough of the clear layer to be a problem if I plan to cover it after? How much does the prep usually add to the final price, and is it worth it for only the front? Will the film bring back some of the gloss, or only protect what is already there? And if I do it all in one visit, how many days should I expect to leave the car? I would really like to hear what you did with an older car. Thanks for reading.
